Friday Links XXXVIII

N.A.D.D.
Rings so unbelievably true it makes me slightly sad that I can so easily be summed up.
Stacks Overlays
Stack icons (or the lack of consistent ones) in the dock is pretty much the only feature in 10.5 I don’t like.
Disabling Deprecated HTML Using CSS
Cunning. Very cunning.
Design doing
The key point here is that web design is not just design nor is it just codeing – it’s both. That’s what makes it special.
Why I love Textpattern
Hear hear! I utterly agree, obviously.
O2 on iPhone: 8,000 activations on day one, 5-year contract
8000 doesn’t really strike me as being all that much, really.
Gibson gets official with the self-tuning Robot Guitar
While I rarely play anymore, that doesn’t stop me from really, really wanting one of these.
Failure Happens: An SLA is just a contract & Data Centers are single points of failure too
There is nothing you can do to prevent things going tits up, so prepare for when it does. It probably doesn’t matter as much as you think it does, though.
The official ‘In Rainbows’ cover
Reminds me of a lot of the artwork v23 do for 4AD – very nice.
Stop Using Poor Performance CSS Expressions – Use JavaScript Instead
I’m not sure how 9 lines of code is better then 1. In my experience, optimising for performance is almost never worth it unless you’re already experiencing an obvious slow down.
Meet Bento
Very interesting – I wonder if the next version of Filemaker is going to be based on a similar platform?
Apple source code pointing to social features?
I would love for apple to become more involved in social networking features like FOAF, and tight integration with Address book and the PubSub RSS framework would be really interesting. Also, if you look in the comments you’ll see that Safari RSS already utilises FOAF – who knew?
Clagnut: Font embedding survey
Quite frankly I think the font foundries are being incredibly short sighted; Font embedding is going to happen, no matter what they want, so – like every other industry – they’re going to have to shape up to the changes the internet will have on their business.
About the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Update
Huzzah – Safari 3 for 10.4! Hopefully the install base of Safari 2 will disappear pretty quickly so we can start using some of the nice new CSS goodies.
Amazon PR: Neither Open Nor Social
Well done guys. Well done.
About the Safari 3 Beta Update 3.0.4 for Windows
Has anyone tested out what the new font smoothing setting is like? I hope they haven’t given in to using standard windows smoothing; I’d really like the rendering to stay as identical as possible to the mac version.
iLike Publishes Unreleased U2 Song
I’m still not sure what I think of iLike – it seems to be a bit ghetto in some way, but they seem to be making some interesting moves.
Music boss: we were wrong to go to war with consumers
Oooh, someone finally gets it.
Choosing a Content Management System for your web project
Nice article – I still don’t think there are any decent CMS out there, though, just lots of sort-of-ok ones.
High-quality YouTube videos coming soon
No surprise here – they were bound to make this move at some point. Hopefully they’ll use the new h264 capability in Flash and force everyone to upgrade…
Six Apart is fixing forums
$10,000 is far, far too much this. Otherwise it looks quite interesting.
Half-Life 2: Episode Two Stats
I love stats. Looove.
