Living Life Online: pitfalls and perks

I’m really quite interested in the potential side effects of all this internet openness, especially with things like Twitter and Facebook where people seem to reveal a lot more then the would have previously.

It’s a temporary phenomenon, though – the kids growing up don’t live (and have never lived) in a world where this doesn’t happen.

Introducing MagCloud and the Future of Magazine Publishing

I really like the idea of being able to self-publish a magazine – it’s a much more interesting concept to me then book self-publishing. Hopefully MagCloud will expand to the UK sooner rather then later as it looks like a very easy way of doing it.

Dean Kamen Outdoes Himself (Again)

This is amazing – Dean Kamen (of Segway infamy) has created a prosthetic arm aimed at amputees. It’s not called the ‘Luke arm’ for nothing (fast forward to the arm demos):

Monocle: design notes

However, they’re also pushing for them to set up a Facebook Page and a MySpace, as well as a whole load of other social network stuff.

How pointless.

If you are a small business, what relevance does a Facebook page have? Are you really going to have a big enough online audience to make that kind of endeavour worth the time and (more importantly if you’re the agency suggesting this stuff) the money?

I think sometimes on the web it’s very easy to forget the simple, straightforward things; anything that’s old is seen as somehow inferior and cast aside in the hunt for the new. Sure, there’s obviously an advantage to be gained by being the first to do something – that can get press...

Rapper DMX on Barack Obama

Guess what all you middle class white people that read the internet? Most people (even in the US) couldn’t care less about the forthcoming presidential election, let alone about who might be in the running to run.

And really, why would they care? Is it really going to make any difference to them?
